The two IBM articles that I have read and will summarize in this post were very interesting. They discuss how modern business is changing and ways that businesses can keep up. The articles mainly talk about the pros of multi-player online gaming and how businesses can learn from these games. The articles also discuss how certain qualities of a person are improved through gaming and how that can translate to the real world.
In this day and age, businesses are highly competitive and very fast-paced. Companies try to take advantage by hiring people from all over the world but find it difficult to understand the capabilities of each person as well as the best ways to communicate with these employees. The two IBM articles bring up how businesses can use the methods and skills of online gamers to their advantage.

In the first IBM article I read,
Virtual Worlds, Real Leaders: Online games put the future of business leadership on display it discusses how leaders are born through online gaming. It brings to light the fact that anyone can be a leader, as long as they put forth the effort and time. Leadership is not quality that someone must be born with, but rather a quality and skill that can be developed. In multi-player online games, leaders are chosen by their skill level, strategy, and ability to effectively communicate with their "guilds." Leadership in online games is also something that isn't permanent. A leadership role can be changed based on environments or needs of the guild. The fact that leadership is not permanent can be relieving to many who do not like the task of being the boss long-term. By allowing leaders to change, it makes cooperation and communication more effective. It also warrants better results because a person who may excel in one particular environment can share their knowledge with the guild, and teach many others. Then if that particular person is not as saavy in another environment, they can assign someone who is saavy in the new environment as leader. If businesses practiced this (although I realize it is harder then it sounds), they would gain more positive results.
In Virtual Worlds, Real Leaders the author also discusses the Sloan Leadership Model, created by students and faculty at MIT's Business School. The leadership model is based off of four thing: Visioning, Sense-making, Relating, and Inventing. Visioning means that a leader is able to consider the future and realize what changes need to be made in order to keep a business successful in the future. Sense-making refers to a leader's ability to make sense of their objectives, communicate it affectively to their employees, and successfully implement them. Relating refers to a leader's ability to communicate with clients, partners, and other businesses or business people. Inventing refers to a leader's ability to create new strategies and products that will benefit the company in the future.

All four abilities or qualities found in the Sloan Leadership Model can be seen in leaders of multi-player online games. Although it is much simpler to find leaders in online games, that doesn't mean businesses can't learn from gamers. Leaders are easy to find in multi-player online games because up-to-date statistics are readily available and skill levels are very apparent. This makes it easier to discover who excels in specific environments and thus makes selecting a leader a simpler task.
There is much to learn from online-gaming. Many skills that can be used in the real world such as leadership, communication, and teamwork/collaboration are very apparent in the gaming world. It has been proven that these skills are greater in athletes and gamers. Businesses in the future can use the collaboration and teamwork aspects in games to better their business. Virtual worlds or even audio whiteboards can make it easier for employers to communicate effectively with their employees in various parts of the world.
